The Barbican, June 7-9 2019

: 1984

On June 8th 2019 Orwell’s seminal book, ‘1984’, turned 70.

His vision of a dystopian future in which citizens interact more with technology than each other, changed the way we think about technology and the future. But what can and does technology do for us? How does it change the way we live?

Step into the lives of those living entirely with technology in ways you might not expect.

Photos by Kevin Lake.

Our two subjects were:

Peter Mitchell: journalist, writer and recent rough sleeper. His life is both threatened and saved by his, and the world's, reliance on technology.
Lee Ridley: better known as Lost Voice Guy, winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2018 and the UK’s first stand-up comedian to use a communication aid in his routines.

This event was free, and open from 11am- 6pm, daily.
